6 f-commerce fraudsters arrested
Police's Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) has arrested six members of a syndicate involved in cheating customers in the name of selling mobile phones and other products by using the social media Facebook page 'Ebay Phone Store'. The arrested persons are - Md. Turyaul Hossain Turya (22), Julhas Hossain alias Shayan (30), Monir Hosne (24), Rajib Biswas (21), Mahfuz Biswas alias Mahfuz (27) and Abdul Al Mukit Kausar (21).
ATU Superintendent of Police (Media and Awareness Wing) Mohammad Aslam Khan said they were arrested based on ATU online monitoring and information received.
He said that on Monday morning they were arrested by conducting a special operation in Bhatara area of the capital. At that time, two laptops and 18 mobile phones used in fraud were recovered from them. Information on 36 Facebook pages used for fraud has been found.
He also said that the arrested persons used to open pages on Facebook under different names and advertise the sale of expensive mobile phones at low prices. When the general public, attracted by the advertisement, contacted the members of the fraudsters, they were first asked to pay Tk. 500 as booking money. Later, the fraudsters extorted more money on various pretexts, including unlocking the phone. Later they cut off contact with customers. In some cases, they would shut down their Facebook pages for a while and open new Facebook pages under different names to continue the scam.
